Privacy Policy

The short version

What is stored on your device

The main page stores nothing in your browser — no cookies, no local storage, no fingerprinting.

The Drought Tracker keeps two preferences in your browser's local storage: the language you selected and whether the charts are shown in compact or expanded mode. They exist so the page remembers your choices between visits. They never leave your device, we cannot read them, and clearing your site data removes them.

What our server receives

Like any website, your browser sends the requested address, your IP address and your user-agent string. Our hosting environment may record these in standard access logs for security and troubleshooting. There is no analytics or tracking product wired into this site, and no profile is built from those logs.

The page content you see in the cube's overlays is served by this site's own API, from the same origin. Nothing you read here is fetched from a third party.

Third parties the Drought Tracker contacts

These are contacted only when you open /drought.html, never from the main page:

ServiceWhyWhat it can see
USGS NWIS
waterservices.usgs.gov
Live reservoir level telemetry Your IP address and the request your browser makes
Esri ArcGIS
services9.arcgis.com
US Drought Monitor drought-zone polygons for the map Your IP address and the request your browser makes
jsDelivr
cdn.jsdelivr.net
Delivers the Chart.js library that draws the level charts Your IP address and the request your browser makes
ip-api.com Our server looks up the country and region of the requesting IP so the page can open in Spanish or English by default Your IP address — sent by our server, not by your browser

Each of those services has its own privacy policy. The map basemap, the Leaflet library and all fonts and images on this site are self-hosted, so they add no further third parties.

Links out to other sites — for example USGS, the US Drought Monitor or PRASA's reservoir charts — take you to sites we do not control, covered by their own policies.

What we do not do

Your choices

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them — beyond what is described above, we do not collect personal information at all.

Changes

If our practices change, this page changes with them and the date at the top is updated. If a new page or game on this site contacts an outside service, it gets added to the table above.
